The
Liberty Idol Contest (a thirteen week competition)
began on April 12th and, over the course of 4 Saturdays,
potential contestants auditioned for their slot to
compete. Sixty
four contestants were selected to compete. Each
Saturday the audience will vote to determine who will
continue through to the finals. This is the third
year for Liberty Idol. In 2007, over 40,000 people
attended Liberty Idol from start to finish. This
Saturday, the crowds are expected to top 4000 again
with the contest show from 7:00PM until 10:00PM. There
are different guest judges every week. The special
Guest Celebrity Judge this week is business Ronald
McDonald House of the Carolinas CEO Bill Sorochak and
he will join WORD morning show host Lisa Rollins. “The
response to this contest has been overwhelming” was
the comment from Brian Deese, Mayor. This is
a family oriented event where both audience members
and contestants are coming from across the upstate. It’s
free to enter and free to watch. The
real story is that the audience and the contestants
have created and shaped this event into something that
is reminiscent of a small town family reunion with
thousands of people. “Everyone that comes
to this event for the first time can’t wait for
the next show.” This year The Ronald McDonald
House of the Carolinas is the Liberty Idol 2008 Charity
of Choice and each contestants can earn additional
votes (up to 20% of the audience vote) by twenty five
cent donations with ALL money raised going to the Ronald
McDonald House. Liberty Idol was chosen as the
Media Achievement Award winner for the State of SC
by the South Carolina Municipality Association.
